After a late night photographing the Northern Lights and not getting to bed until 1.30am, the thing I most needed was sleep. Not a chance! Up at 5.50am to get ready to go out for our session at the ice beach. This is a spectacular area of black volacnic sand scattered with a variety of ice shapes, from huge boulders to small fragments. All of this ice has been washed out from the lagoon. We spent 2 hours taking a variety of shots from very complex ice crystals using a variety of exposures to dramatic wave crashes over the larger chunks of ice. A fantastic session but very cold and a lot of quick movements took place to ensure equipment and ourselves were not swamped by waves. Colin moved too slowly and tripped and fell back in the water (steep learning curve!).
Back for breakfast of cold meat, cheeses, bread and fruit plus lashings of hot tea to warm through.
A thoroughly enjoyable first session to the day.
2 hours free time to download pictures, blog, etc then a tutoring session on manipulating images and lunch.
Headed out at 3.00pm to the East, reindeer in the fields and we arrived at Fifutjorn lagoon for 45 minutes for cloud and ice photos.
4.30pm - we aimed to get to Heinaburg Jokull national park but we had to turn back, as the tracks were dangerous.
5.34pm we arrived back at the Jokularson lagoon for further photos until 7.15pm. A quick shower and meal at 8pm. After the meal we realised the aurora had started so we all changed rapidly and sped off to the Jokularson lagoon and set our cameras up. We were entertained for over an hour to an incredible display of the Northern Lights (see photos in Day 4). We were also entertained by several seals!
Another fabulous day!
