After 6 hours sleep, I arose at 5.50am ready for an early start for the Crystal ice caves. We travelled to Jokulsarlon for a 7am start, where we transferred to a 4x4 with huge wheels. We went on the main road for a short while and then across ice and snow for an hour to the ice caves. What we found was surreal. View my photos for a treat! We spent 1hr 50 minutes taking photographs and had a very late breakfast. We then travelled back to Jokulsarlon and transferred to our Landcruiser for our journey to our accommodation. Downtime for 2 hours to catch up on downloading photos, blogs, etc.
We picked a packed lunch up at the restaurant at 2.05pm and headed East to a glacier. We went down a narrow track as far as we could in the direction of the glacier and then set off on foot. It took us about 40 minutes walking to get a close as we could but we were thwarted by a river. We stayed at the river for photos and our packed lunch and then headed back and stopped to take photos of an Icelandic horse at 6.20pm and further along the road near the Jokulsarlon lagoon we stopped to take photos of clouds. All the photos are in the photo section (or will be after dinner and maybe the aurora again),
Dinner was great tonight - Smoked Char and salad for my starter and lamb with rhubarb jam for my main course.
No sign of the aurora yet (I can look out from my room window to check). So I might get an early night. We are up at 6am tomorrow ready for a 6.30 start. We will be heading for the ice beach again, as it will be our last chance. The reason for an early shoot is that the light is good and the sunrise.
